MEDIA RELEASE – Leaving home to go to University? Get your immunisations up to date
If you’re getting prepared to head off to University or other tertiary study, now is a good time to check you’re up to date with your immunisations. It is never too late to catch up and most immunisations are free until you turn 18.
“There’s lots to arrange - choosing courses, finding accommodation, sorting student loans, but don’t forget to make sure you’re up-to-date with your immunisations before you leave home,” says Dr Jim Miller, Medical Officer of Health.
Immunisation is your best protection against many serious but preventable diseases. Don’t assume you’re immune. Check with your family doctor or nurse to make sure you are protected.
If you are 18 or older you can still get immunised but there will most likely be a fee which will vary depending on the vaccine and the GP Practice.
“There are other immunisations which are not subsidised but are worth considering. For example if you are planning to live in a hostel or shared accommodation I recommend getting immunised against meningococcal disease,” says Dr Miller.
For further information contact your family doctor or visit getimmunised.org.nz.
