Forum focuses on educating health professionals
How New Zealand’s education and training system can support a strong, sustainable health workforce is the focus of a
forum being held in Wellington today.
The Educating the Health Workforce forum brings together senior staff from both the health and tertiary education sectors to discuss challenges, issues,
and opportunities involved in workforce education. Rather than focusing on one sector or profession, it focuses on the
entire range of health occupations and environments, including the non-regulated workforce.
The event is led by Ako Aotearoa the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence, with support from Health
Workforce New Zealand.
Ako Aotearoa Director Dr Peter Coolbear says: “A high-performing, sustainable heath workforce requires a high-quality,
sustainable education and training system, while fit-for-purpose education arrangements need to reflect both the world
of current practice and future developments. We are pleased to support an event that strengthens those connections.”
Topics to be covered at the forum include strengthening pathways into health careers, how to support and grow the Māori
health workforce, better linking education and health providers, and effective learning in practice settings. The event
is being run with the support of Massey University’s College of Health.
Ako Aotearoa is New Zealand’s National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence. Funded by the Tertiary Education
Commission, it funds projects on high quality teaching practices, provides professional development, runs the national
Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards, and leads debate on key issues for tertiary education in New Zealand.
