More resources for diabetes welcomed
“The Government’s new suite of resources for upskilling the diabetes health workforce and supporting people with
diabetes is welcome and it comes not a moment too soon,” Diabetes NZ President Chris Baty said today.
Diabetes New Zealand is a national organisation with a network of 20 branches throughout the country providing support
in our local communities for people living with diabetes.
“Without a doubt diabetes is one of New Zealand’s most serious health issues. Nearly a quarter of a million people have
diabetes and this number is steadily rising, with 50 more people a day being diagnosed. This makes it imperative that
action is taken right now to get the diabetes epidemic under control,” said Chris Baty.
“Diabetes NZ has long been advocating for the provision of accessible and appropriate ongoing support and treatment for
all people with diabetes both within the community and within health services. The new resources will help in addressing
this need and will complement the services being provided by Diabetes NZ and others.”
Chris Baty said that diabetes is a really complex condition and people need support as they learn to manage it for
themselves. “Support is really important. This is where Diabetes NZ comes in. We’re here to help. We work closely with
medical professionals to offer support, education and friendship as people learn to understand their illness and how to
live well with diabetes.

“On this week - Diabetes Awareness Week, and on this day - World Diabetes Day, Diabetes NZ wants to get the word out
