Seeking Support Workers
As home support plays an increasingly important role in healthcare services, new challenges have emerged for home care
providers - recruiting sufficient support worker staff.
The regional manager for Porirua based Access Homehealth, Janine Gera, says the home support sector makes a major
contribution to one of today’s most recognised health issues – our ageing population.
“As the demand for our services increases, we are continually looking for more support workers to help people live
independent lives in their home and communities.
“Support workers deliver a broad range of vital personal care services, especially for those over sixty-five, or someone
living with a disability or long-term condition. Anything from dressing, bathing and grooming to helping clients get in
and out of bed. They also make clients more comfortable in their own homes, assisting with household tasks such as
cleaning cooking and childcare.
Ms Gera says support workers appreciate the personal development opportunities Access provides for them to gain NZQA
qualifications. “For those looking to extend their career path, this training can be a valuable asset and a gateway onto
more advanced areas of care.”
