Did you know that 1 child dies at the hands of a family member in NZ, every 5 weeks? You probably agree that these statistics are horrendous, and you aren’t alone.

At Shine, our experienced professionals are working directly with the victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse, and it’s our goal to combat this overwhelming problem.

Our Shine Advocates visit victims in their home, in hospital or at a police station, providing immediate support and information. During this visit, the Advocate can talk to the victim about her options and help her to work out how to best keep herself and her children safe. The advocate will also make any urgent referrals to other services such as a lawyer, a court victim advisor or women’s refuge.

“I once met with a woman who, along with her three small children, had been taken to a local police station, after being beaten by her partner. He had left the house after the incident so the police had been unable to find and arrest him. The victim was terrified of returning to her home, and had nowhere safe to stay with her children that night. It was after midnight and we were unable to get her into a local refuge. I talked to my manager, and we agreed that the only safe option was for Shine to pay for a motel room for her and her children for the night, and then we could find safe accommodation for them the following day.” – Shine Advocate

It costs approximately $175 for a Shine Advocate to work with a victim of domestic abuse. And sadly, right now, we just don’t have enough funding to get to all of the victims that urgently need us.

This really is life or death. Every 3 weeks, a New Zealand woman is killed by a family member.

Living in fear of being hurt or killed is torment. But add to that the fear of your children also being hurt or killed, makes it a living hell. Unfortunately, many victims do not know how to leave, so they need our courageous and experienced advocates to help them.
