New Zealand's first breastfeeding seminar for physicians
New Zealand's first breastfeeding seminar for physicians
31 August 2014
The country’s first breastfeeding seminar for physicians is to be held in Auckland next month.
‘What Every Doctor Needs to Know’ will provide up-to-date research and clinical information on current issues in breastfeeding medicine.
The seminar has been organised by La Leche League New Zealand to coincide with the start of the breastfeeding support organisation’s 50th anniversary conference.
“Over the past few years we have noticed an increase in phone, email and Facebook queries about breastfeeding problems. Some of these queries are from medical doctors who want to know more and some are from mothers who want their doctors to know more! So we saw there was a need to help the Physicians, to help the mothers and babies. We do not want anyone to be let-down,” said organiser Debbie Graham.
The programme features three physicians of only 5 in the country who are also lactation consultants.
Dr Alison Barrett, OBGYN based at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, said, “Many women turn to their doctors for information and support to reach their breastfeeding goals. This conference is about sharing the cutting edge of breastfeeding information with our peers. We are keen to share our knowledge, clinical experience and ideas with other doctors and to support them to help the mothers they see in their day-to-day work. I'm very excited to be part of the first conference of this kind in New Zealand.”
The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP), The Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RNZCOG) and The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) have all put their seal of approval on the programme and allocated education points for each doctor attending.
The seminar takes
place on Friday 3 October at the Waipuna Hotel & Conference
Centre, Auckland. Registrations close on 26
September.
