Red Nose Day raises over $1 million for child health research
For the first 22 days of August, Kiwis helped paint the country red for a serious cause and raised $1,042,267 for vital child health research.
Over 550 schools around the country and hundreds of businesses baked, created and competed with each other to raise money.
Some of the country’s best comedians also lent their support to the campaign. The fundraising activity culminated in the 7 Days Red Nose Special on TV3 (Friday 22 August) with guests Jono Pryor and Ben Boyce from Jono and Ben at Ten.
Highlights from the show included theatrics from All Blacks Jerome Kaino and Israel Dagg, a giant cheque from the Briscoes Group and an appearance from rugby legend, Jonah Lomu. The final amount raised was announced on TV3’s The Paul Henry Show.
Vicki Lee, CEO of Cure Kids says “This year’s campaign has been stronger than ever. It really is a national endeavor and the funds raised will go to vital child health research that will benefit not only our children, but their children and grandchildren,” Lee says.
Cure Kids is the official charity of the All Blacks and New Zealand Rugby and funds research into better treatments for a wide range of childhood illnesses, while working towards the ultimate goal, the cure. These illnesses include cot death (SUDI), stillbirth, leukaemia, rheumatic heart disease, asthma, inherited heart conditions and mental health conditions, among others.
People can still donate by going to www.rednoseday.co.nz or text NOSE to 933 to make an automatic $3 donation. Follow the Red Nose Day campaign via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
