Subject: $10,000 Donation of Toys and Equipment to Child Health Centre
Staff at Whangarei Hospital’s Child Health Centre were in for a lot of fun today as they opened boxes containing $10,000 worth of brand new donated toys and equipment to benefit the children of Northland.
The owners of several Educare centres (private early childhood centres) throughout the North Island, including Whangarei, Alan and Jacqui Lints, decided they wanted to give back to the community. The Child Health Centre fit with their centre’s philosophy of ‘laugh, learn, play’. Driven by We Care – an organisation set up within the Educare community – a number of events were held, resulting in $10,000 raised through discos, pancake breakfasts, trikathons and hampers, to name a few activities.
We Care chairperson Megan Attwood said the Educare staff had much support from families with the fundraising and they were proud of their effort.
“We decided it was important to do fundraising for our community. We have children at the centre who use the (Child Health Centre) facilities and some of us have been touched personally.
“Alan and Jacqui have been very generous and doubled the funding raised.”
Maternal & Child Health services operations manager Yvonne Hunter said at the presentation morning tea that the donation was “amazingly generous and shows such community spirit. It will always benefit the children of Northland.
“I think there will be a lot of fun had as we open the boxes.”
Added speech and language therapist Alexandra Cave: “The therapy team are really excited to have some new toys to have for the kids and to utilise them and we’re really grateful for the donations.”
The resources include therapy toys, specialised therapy/feeding seats, i-pads, a big screen tv and an electronic stimulation kit for use in physiotherapy, to name a few.
