New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) has launched an online pledge campaign in time for World Blood Donor Day to encourage more people to become blood donors.

“This World Blood Donor Day we are celebrating ‘Safe blood for safe motherhood’. Last year alone almost 12,000 units of blood and blood products were used by mums and new-born babies across New Zealand,” says Asuka Burge, National Manager Marketing and Communications for New Zealand Blood Service.

“We want to say a huge thank you to all our donors, supporters and volunteers who together form part of an amazing lifesaving team. To coincide with this global celebration of blood donors we have launched a pledge campaign to encouraging more Kiwis to become real life heroes and pledge their support to help the thousands of people who need donated blood or blood products every year.”

It’s not just mums and new-borns that benefit from the kindness of blood donors. Across New Zealand 115 people need lifesaving blood and blood products every day - that’s 42,000 people every year whose lives are touched by the selfless generosity of donors throughout the country.

“Each year, NZBS loses up to 28,000 donors due to retirement, ill health or personal choice. By pledging your support, you’re helping spread the word about blood donation and most importantly, helping NZBS build its donor database which constantly needs new donors. One donation has the potential to save up to three people’s lives.”

People across the country are being asked to pledge their support via an app on the New Zealand Blood Service Facebook Page or www.nzblood.co.nz. Those who are eligible to donate will be notified on how to book an appointment to donate. Those who aren’t are thanked for supporting NZBS and encouraged to help spread the word about the life-saving role donor’s play.

To ensure that ‘every drop counts’ NZBS operates on a ‘right donor, right product, right place, right time’ basis; this means that some donors may donate less often, or more frequently, than others depending on their blood type and location.
