Prolife New Zealand stunned at Green Party commitment to extreme abortion law
Prolife New Zealand welcomes debate on the current NZ abortion laws, particularly in regard to tightening the current weaknesses around the lack of informed consent.
Sadly, today’s newly announced policy on abortion from the Greens fails to address these serious deficiencies in the current law, and instead calls for the introduction of an extreme abortion law in New Zealand.
“The Green Party policy would result in an extreme abortion law which would remove many of the basic safeguards which protect the rights and health of women, and medical practitioners in this country,” says ProLife NZ media spokesperson Rebecca Vergunst.
“It’s hard to understand why the Greens have made such a divisive and extreme policy one of their key election planks when you consider the fact that not only has the NZ abortion rate been dropping steadily for several years now, but with almost 15,000 abortions performed in NZ last year, access is clearly not a problem for anyone who seeks one out.”
Prolife New Zealand is also concerned that the Green Party now appears to have aligned itself with the Abortion Law Reform Association of NZ (ALRANZ), the extremist abortion lobby group headed by American abortion activist Morgan Healey. For many years ALRANZ has been trying to have an extreme abortion law, which would result in abortion-up-to-birth, introduced in New Zealand.
"It's a shame that the Greens, an otherwise progressive party in the area of disability rights and human dignity, would support such extreme measures that run so contrary to their stated principles - this policy now effectively sees the Greens become NZ’s ‘abortion party’” says Rebecca Vergunst.
Prolife New Zealand believes that mainstream New Zealanders are people of goodwill who don’t want to see an extreme abortion law introduced in their country, and so we call on the Greens to reject this American style approach to abortion.
“What is needed right now in this country is better support for women, and better options, not more abortion” says Prolife New Zealand media spokesperson Rebecca Vergunst.
