The Muscular Dystrophy Association of New Zealand (MDA) congratulates the Centre for Brain Research on their success in gaining CoRE funding, which will help progress research into brain health in New Zealand.

The MDA as community partner of the Centre for Brain Research, are particularly excited by the news as the work the Centre does is of particular benefit to those diagnosed with Friedreich Ataxia and Spinocerebellar Ataxia, both neuromuscular conditions which the MDA supports. Brain Research New Zealand – Rangahau Roro Aotearoa, will develop new therapies and better clinical and community care to enhance brain health throughout life.

It's estimated that one in five New Zealanders will suffer from Neurological disease in their lifetime. Disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, Neuromuscular conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy, Motor Neurone disease, Multiple Sclerosis and deafness affect hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders every year.

Neurological diseases are among the top five most common causes of death and long-term disability. The cost to families and society, both financially and socially, is enormous and any advancements in treatments is greatly needed.

The MDA provides information and support, including advocacy, to people affected by Muscular Dystrophies and other neuromuscular conditions. These conditions are rare but many and primarily result in disabling muscle wastage which can be devastating for those diagnosed and their families. Symptoms can appear at birth or for others not until much later in life. These conditions are unpredictable as to who will be affected and there is no cure. It is estimated that there are 4,400 people living with a neuromuscular condition in New Zealand currently.
