Praising our wonderful nursing staff
Southern DHB nurses are being congratulated and praised even more than usual on Monday (May 12), as they celebrate
International Nurses Day.
DHB nurses will gather at awards ceremonies being held in Dunedin and Southland on Monday. The Awards celebrate and
acknowledge nursing innovation, clinical excellence and outstanding practice in nursing across the region.
Southern DHB Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Leanne Samuel said that, "International Nurses Day is a great
opportunity for us to celebrate the work of our wonderful nurses at the Southern DHB. We have absolutely extraordinary
nurses and there are so many fantastic examples of our expert nursing staff going the extra mile to deliver the very
best care for patients and our community."
New Graduate Registered Nurse, Emma Gibson who works on Ward 8B at Dunedin Hospital said that, "the chance to celebrate
my profession is great. Nurses are not always the best at talking about the work we do and the difference we make to
people's lives. I love my job, it's great to be able to help people, I love learning new things and no day is ever the
same."
Emma's patient, Mrs Ngair McGroucher, praised the nurses at Dunedin Hospital for their care. "They're excellent
nurses," she said. "They're very caring, thoughtful, they anticipate what I need and above all I feel really confident
in them."
Southern DHB employs over 2000 nurses who all make the most significant contribution to improving the health and
wellbeing of patients in the Southern District. Each year the invaluable role that nurses play in keeping people in New
Zealand and around the world as healthy and independent as possible is recognised on International Nurses Day (12 May),
the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. It is a day for the community and the Southern DHB to say thank you.
