Don’t let the heat beat you this summer

Don’t let the heat beat you this summer. If you are young, elderly or unwell (especially with heart disease or high blood pressure), you may be particularly vulnerable in hot conditions.

To ensure you and your family have a memorable summer for all the right reasons, make sure you take precautions when having fun in the sun. If you find you are struggling with the heat, take note of the tips below, recommended by MDHB Public Health to help keep cool:

• Never stay or leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle during hot weather, even for a short time

• Drink plenty of fluids – but avoid alcoholic, caffeinated, hot or sugary drinks. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink.

• Start drinking fluids before going out in the heat. However, if your doctor limits the amount of fluid you drink, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot.

• If you are undertaking strenuous outdoor exercise cut down on the level of exercise you are undertaking and time the exercise for early morning or evening when the temperatures are lower.

• Wear sun block, hats and light coloured, loose fitting clothing

• Check frequently on the elderly and those who are ill or may need help

• At first signs of heat illness – dizziness, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps – move to a cooler place well ventilated place, rest a few minutes, then slowly drink a cool drink. If there is no improvement or if severe symptoms such as confusion or collapse are present seek medical assistance.
