Response to FANNZ water fluoridation

Dietitians New Zealand and its members has the well-being of the New Zealand public at heart and are fully qualified to comment on the water fluoridation issue currently in debate around New Zealand.

Dietitians New Zealand is the professional association for registered dietitians. All registered dietitians have a post-graduate university qualification making them New Zealand experts in food, nutrition and health. They are also qualified to confidently assess scientific evidence. This combination of skills enables dietitians to comment on nutrition and human health, which is outside the scope of practice of other health professionals.

Dietitians’ have expertise in a wide range of nutrients, specific to human health and disease. This includes recommended and upper limits of nutrient intakes and potential health benefits and risks. We deal daily with assessing the levels of different nutrients in people’s diets and correcting any deficiency or excess in a tailored, sustainable way.

A code of ethics governs the way a registered dietitian uses their knowledge, ensuring the key ideas of benefiting others and causing no harm are at the forefront of their everyday practice.
