Updated statement on infant formula quality issue
The Infant Nutrition Council (INC) today reassured consumers in New Zealand and Australia that infant formula companies have the safety of their products as the highest priority.
On 2 August an advice was issued regarding a quality issue involving infant formula products made with an ingredient produced in New Zealand, leading to the precautionary recall of 3 specific batches of 2 Karicare infant formula products in New Zealand. Nutricia, the makers of Karicare, has subsequently decided to instigate a further precautionary and full voluntary recall of all batches of those 2 products. (See attached media release from Nutricia for specific details).
INC CEO Jan Carey says, “the Infant Nutrition Council is working with its members and New Zealand government authorities to ensure consumers are aware of the precautionary recall. No other brands are affected, and the precautionary recall does not affect any Nutricia products sold in Australia.
“Consumers can be reassured that the infant formula industry takes the safety of their products very seriously. There are well developed safety measures in their supply chains which are serving to isolate and recall potentially affected products,” Ms Carey said.
The Infant Nutrition Council (INC) represents some of the most respected food companies in the world including local manufacturers producing formula for export, and works with government to ensure food standards are aligned with international practice and that breastfeeding is protected.
