Hospice Awareness Week

Are you living every moment? – Hospice Awareness Week 13-19 May 2013

Hospice Awareness Week is a great time to think about what matters to you and discuss it with those closest to you, your family and friends. Take some time to think and talk about what you value, what you appreciate and what makes you happy – people, experiences or possessions.

“We often hear from people using our services, that it is the little things that mean the most as they approach the end of their lives, time for reflection is important for everyone to ensure you are giving yourself the opportunity to live every moment.” said Mary Schumacher, Chief Executive, Hospice NZ.

Hospice is a philosophy of care, which extends beyond physical needs, encompassing emotional, spiritual and social needs as well as caring for the needs of the family.

Last year the 29 hospice services throughout the country provided care and support for more than 14,400 people living with a life limiting condition, completely free of charge.

“We know people associate hospice with a building – and many services do have inpatient facilities, but the majority of people are cared for in their own homes, last year that meant over 140,000 visits to people in the community throughout the country”

“As an essential health service, hospices receive funding from government – but still need to fundraise over $25M nationally every year” explained Ms Schumacher. Hospice New Zealand Patron and Ambassador Jo Seagar says with 29 hospices throughout the country there is plenty of opportunity to get involved no matter where you are.

“During Hospice Week why not look into what is happening in your community, there are plenty of ways you can get involved – attending an event, giving your time, donating, whatever you choose to do, I guarantee you will enjoy every minute” For more information about hospice and to see where your local Hospice is go to www.hospice.org.nz
