Youth Suicide Expert In Hamilton

Internationally renowned suicide expert, Professor Hatim Omar, will visit Hamilton next month to give a public lecture on youth suicide prevention.

Dr Omar - Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Kentucky and chair of the successful Stop Youth Suicide campaign – was invited to Hamilton by Wintec’s Centre for Health and Social Practice.

During his visit, he will share his expert knowledge on youth suicide prevention and the success of his Stop Youth Suicide campaign in reducing youth suicide rates in the state of Kentucky over the last 12 years.

The Ministry of Health’s latest figures released in 2010, reported a total of 113 youth (15-24 years) died by suicide in New Zealand making it the second most common cause of death for youth.

The public lecture will be held from 6:30-8:30pm on Wednesday 15 May at Wintec’s city campus, Room CG.18 (C Block).

This will be the third time Professor Omar has visited Hamilton to speak publically on this topic. His previous sessions were attended by more than 700 people from around the region.

The session is free and open to the public. Please RSVP by emailing sandy.thomson@wintec.ac.nz by Friday 10 May.

Other guest speakers include health promoter for the Waikato District Health Board’s Population Health, Lindie Smith and Wintec researcher and Associate Professor at Kentucky University’s Adolescent Medicine Centre, Dr Said Shahtahmasebi.

Further public sessions on youth suicide will be held in Tokoroa, Rotorua, Christchurch and Dunedin during May.
