Canterbury DHB welcomes announcement on Kaikoura Hospital
Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) is delighted the Government has approved the development of a new integrated
family health centre on the Kaikoura Hospital site.
David Meates, CDHB Chief Executive says it is exciting to finally be able to deliver on the promise to build a new
facility, with the board made to the community a number of years ago.
“This is fantastic news for the community,” Mr Meates says.
“It’s really positive to be able to move forward with plans for Kaikoura and designs are currently in the process of
being finalised.”
A new health centre will replace the current health facility, which in some areas is more than 100 years old.
It will continue to provide primary care, aged care, acute maternity care, radiology services and trauma stabilisation.
“It’s about the right care, in the right place at the right time by the right person and this should mean Kaikōura
patients do not have to travel to Christchurch as often as they currently do.”
Mr Meates says the CDHB also acknowledges the ongoing support for the project from the Kaikōura Community, who has also
committed to investing in the project.
