Changes in the maternity area at Grey Base Hospital
The necessity to vacate the seaward end of the Morice / McBrearty ward block due to seismic concerns will result in some changes to maternity services at Grey Base Hospital.
The maternity ward, McBrearty Ward, is being reconfigured and services are moving into the area formerly occupied by the Brian Waterson Day Surgery Unit. The number and size of available rooms will result in some changes to services offered.
Midwife clinics will now take place in Parfitt Ward rather than in McBrearty. There is a pleasant waiting area and all facilities currently offered are available there so it will be ‘same service, different location’.
The reconfigured rooms are smaller than those previously found in McBrearty which means that the rooms can no longer accommodate partners overnight. Accordingly partners will need to make other arrangements for themselves over the period that women are admitted to the ward.
The West Coast DHB whanau house is available for short-term accommodation and can be booked through main reception at Grey Base Hospital. Note that this facility is not always available as it serves the whole hospital.
