Relay For Life: NZ communities part of global movement against cancer
This summer over 20,000 New Zealanders will come together to celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer by participating in Relay For Life—the world’s largest cancer engagement and fundraising activity.
New Zealand is one of twenty countries in which Relay For Life events are held. In 2013, a record-breaking 22 events will take place across the country, in addition to over 6,100 Relay For Life events worldwide.
Often described as a life-changing experience, Relay is a team event to celebrate cancer survivors and caregivers; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back against a disease that affects one in three New Zealanders. People of all ages and levels of fitness are welcome.
Each Relay begins with a moving Opening Ceremony, with cancer survivors and caregivers leading the first lap of the event. Team members then walk for 30-minute intervals, with some prefering to jog or run. When they’re not on the track, participants enjoy on-site activities and entertainment.
At dusk, a Candlelight Ceremony is held. This is a time to remember loved ones who have been affected by cancer. Team members continue to walk/jog through the night, symbolising the fact that cancer never sleeps. In the morning, teams come together for an inspiring Closing Ceremony. This is a time to celebrate accomplishments and acknowledge the community’s support and commitment.
Prior to each Relay event, teams raise funds and awareness to support the work of the Cancer Society of New Zealand. Local organising committees provide information and encouragement to help Relay teams every step of the way.
Families, service and community organisations, corporate groups, local businesses, schools and sporting clubs are encouraged to register their interest for Relay events happening this summer.
