F Wins World Design Awards for Innovation
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation Limited announced today that two of its products won design awards at the iF
(International Forum) Design Awards announced in Germany this week, with Optiflow™ Junior nasal cannula and the F Pilairo™ nasal pillows mask taking out prizes. Based in Europe, the iF Design Awards have been recognising
international product design excellence since 1953 and is today among the most important awards of its type worldwide.
This follows on from earlier success at the New Zealand BEST Awards held in October, where the Optiflow Junior nasal
cannula also won Gold and Purple Pin prizes. The BEST Design Awards is the annual showcase of excellence in graphic,
spatial product and interactive design, with entries judged Best in each category awarded the Gold Pin and the supreme
Purple Pin awarded for work that raises the bar of New Zealand design.
Dominic Russo, BEST awards judge and Victorian President of the Designers Institute of Australia said “Optiflow Junior
is an exceptional piece of design work that demonstrates the power of a high-level human-centred approach to design
underpinned by significant ‘upfront’ research, design insights and technical development work" and “it demonstrates
leadership in the field, and revolutionises the care of seriously ill infants”.
“These awards are recognition of our commitment to patient and clinician-centric design principles, and our substantial
resource and financial commitment to research and development” commented Michael Daniell, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s Chief Executive Officer. “Customer response to these new medical devices has been very positive and
the awards are another indication that our solutions are world-leading”.
Optiflow Junior is a revolutionary system for providing simple and effective delivery of oxygen therapy to infants in
respiratory distress, and combines an anatomically contoured nasal cannula with optimally humidified flow.
The F Pilairo is a nasal pillows mask used for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and has been designed for patient
comfort and performance. The clean and simple design is, very compact, unobtrusive, and lightweight. The mask weighs 52
grams and gives patients a clear field of view, reducing claustrophobia and increasing patient comfort.
The clever design integrates a new self-inflating AirPillow™ Seal and minimal headgear. The minimal headgear is light,
easy to fit and doesn’t need adjustment. As a result, the patient experiences freedom of movement coupled with stability
they can trust for a good night’s sleep.
