Professor Jim Mann's resignation disturbing in light of diabetes epidemic
The Public Health Association (PHA) is disturbed to learn Professor Jim Mann has resigned from his position as Chair of the Ministry of Health's Expert Advisory Group on Diabetes and Cardio-Vascular Disease (CVD).
Professor Mann is not only one of New Zealand's pre-eminent experts on nutrition and diabetes but has held or continues to hold significant posts at the World Health Organization and other international bodies concerned with nutrition, diabetes and the role of obesity in cancer. He has a long career in research and publication on these issues.
"The loss of Jim's voice at the table in developing policy and prevention strategies for diabetes and CVD is very worrying," says PHA Chief Executive Officer Warren Lindberg.
"The scale of the diabetes epidemic in New Zealand now is serious and its threat to our health and lives in the foreseeable future can't be minimised.
“While innovations such as specialist diabetes nursing and the Ministry of Health's target to increase checks for diabetes and CVD has improved early intervention, investment in prevention remains a challenging area for debate.
“That someone of Jim Mann's stature and dedication should leave the Ministry's expert advisory group quoting 'frustration' is a major concern."
