Blue September: Brown turns Blue for prostate cancer
Blue September: Brown turns Blue for a good cause
Auckland Mayor Len Brown showed his support for the men of New Zealand this morning by going blue to promote awareness about prostate cancer.
The Mayor responded to the call to Face Up to Prostate Cancer applying blue paint to his face either during the month-long Blue September campaign.
He also extended a challenge to the people of Auckland to get behind the campaign and join him in going blue.
“Prostate cancer takes the lives of over 550 Kiwi men every year. That’s too many in my opinion and it’s about time we all stood up and took some responsibility for our health.”
Now into its fifth year Blue September is about getting men and their loved ones to face up to prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in NZ men. It is to men what breast cancer is to women. 1 in 10 NZ men will get it in their lifetime.
Stu Wilson, former All Black captain and Blue September ambassador, showed his artistic side as he painted the Mayor’s face.
“I get an annual check for prostate cancer and encourage other men to do the same. Get real and Get Blue this September.”
With approximately 3,000 new cases diagnosed each year and over 550 dying of the disease, prostate cancer touches the lives of many New Zealanders.
While there’s no way of preventing prostate cancer, the disease is very treatable if caught early enough. Many men are dying prematurely simply because they didn’t go to the doctor and get checked.
