Simple Solution to Wean Kids off Damaging, Sugary Soft Drinks
If you didn’t get to see the Sunday programme on TV which aired in June, entitled ‘The Big Gulp’, you may wish to click on the link to view this very disturbing expose of what the excessive consumption of soft drinks is doing to the next generation. Go to http://tvnz.co.nz/sunday-news/ceo-s-crusade-against-soft-drinks-video-4922363 to see the full version. Obesity in children is a global pandemic, and fizzy drinks are being seen as one of the major contributors to this huge problem. ‘Frighteningly, there is now evidence that this might be the first generation who will have a shorter lifespan than their parents. If this isn’t enough cause for concern, just ask any health professional about the overloading of hospital and health services with those people who have diabetes and heart disease.
The CEO of Just Water, Tony Falkenstein aka ‘The Water Man’ as he is known in South Auckland, calls this epidemic a tidal wave and calls soft drinks evil and addictive and even toxic. Tony is on a crusade against soft drinks and the resulting obesity in children in particular and Tony had an idea. He remembered how his daughter’s friends had reacted when he brought a water cooler home from work. They loved the idea of pouring their own glass of water from the cooler in the kitchen. Tony thought this might work with families in South Auckland if he supplied the containers rent free. So, every weekday, ‘The Water Man’ sends deliveries of pre-cooled water to South Auckland suburbs in an endeavour to change the drinking habits of these very impressionable kids. And, it’s working as it is a novelty. This is how Aqua-cool, the home delivery system was born. These bottles are returnable, reusable, refillable and are 100% recyclable.
Just Water is the exclusive provider of Drink Safe International certified coolers, the leading code of practice for servicing and sanitising water coolers. We all know that water is good for us but did you know that every system in your body depends on it? Water keeps your whole body working efficiently and helps prevent illness and infection, flushing toxins from your body, and assisting the functioning of your kidneys, liver and bowel.
Obesity is seen as a marker for metabolic dysfunction and what is causing that metabolic dysfunction has been proven to be sugar. The huge increase in the consumption of sugar, in particular sugary drinks will continue to cause obesity in our young people unless we have some more ‘hands on’ incentives such as that being shown by the likes of The Water Man.
