Christchurch launch of Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal

July 31, 2012

Media invited to Christchurch launch of Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal

The 2012 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal kicks off this week raising money for children’s wards around New Zealand.

In Christchurch the appeal will be launched at Countdown, Hornby, on Thursday August 2 and media are invited to attend.

The appeal involves a series of local and national fundraising events organised by Countdown supermarkets, support offices and local district health boards.

Now in its sixth year, the annual appeal has so far donated almost $5 million to 10 dedicated children’s hospitals and wards throughout New Zealand. All funds raised go towards purchasing medical equipment for hospitals including Christchurch, Greymouth, Otago, Invercargill, Whangarei, Waikato, Tauranga, Hawke’s Bay, and Wellington, as well as Kidz First Children’s Hospital in Auckland.

Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal Chairperson Ruth Krippner said there are dozens of ways everyday New Zealanders can help provide much needed medical support for children.

“The message we want to send out to New Zealanders is that you don’t have to be a doctor or nurse to help sick kids,” she said.

Fundraising activity will include trivia nights, golf tournaments, a nationwide raffle and checkout collections.

Canterbury District Health Board last year gratefully received $64,485 from the appeal for its child health service. The money was used to purchase paediatric intravenous stands and accessories, portable suction units, tympanic thermometers, breast pumps, a jaundice meter, glucose monitors, and magnifying glasses.
