Response To FASD Article
Hi
there,
I appreciated your article on FASD but was
disappointed to read the last line: “This is one of those
cases where legislation which limits the access of alcohol
to young pregnant mothers, would have a huge economic and
social return on investment.” This is a statement that is
misleading and based on a stereotype. Shaming and blaming
pregnant women isn’t helpful and to state that it’s
young pregnant mothers who need to be legislatively targeted
is incorrect. All women who drink and are sexually active
are at risk of delivering a child with FASD and young women
are not at highest risk according to research. If a broader
perspective is taken and education, support, and resources
are provided to women it could be much more effective than
instituting legislation on access to
alcohol.
Thank-you.
