Wiltshire Aged Care facilities audit July 12 2012

Wiltshire Aged Care facilities audit July 12 2012

The Canterbury District Health Board has appointed a temporary manager to support Wiltshire’s resthome and hospital Age Residential Care facilities in Rangiora.
The appointment follows an independent health audit last week, in response to concerns some residents, family members and former staff raised.
Dr Nigel Millar, CDHB chief medical officer says the audit was to determine whether the concerns raised required the CDHB to take further action.

“The preliminary findings indicate it is appropriate to provide temporary management,” Dr Millar says.

“The CDHB’s priority is always the safety and well being of residents at any of its contracted aged care services in Canterbury.”

The audit team was made up of independent health care professionals, including a nurse practitioner and senior nurses.

The audit involved clinical assessments of consenting residents. It also looked at processes and included interviews with some residents and their families as well as staff in order to assess relationships and the effectiveness of communications.

“Ensuring we communicate effectively with residents, family members and staff is very important, and why we met with them yesterday (July 11, 2012) to reassure them about what we are doing to resolve the concerns raised and to give them an opportunity to ask questions,” Dr Millar says.

“CDHB will continue to work with the management team at Wiltshire resthome and hospital to implement improvements suggested by the audit and will keep residents, their families and staff informed through regular progress updates.”

Wiltshire aged care facilities in Rangiora include rest home, hospital level care and dementia care for more than 80 residents. The temporary manager has been appointed to support the owner/operators in relation to the 56 bed rest home and hospital facilities only.
