Nurses Organisation celebrates enrolled nurse day

Nurses Organisation celebrates enrolled nurse day

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is celebrating Enrolled Nurses Day on Saturday 30 June. Enrolled nurses are a vital part of the health care team and are employed in health settings throughout New Zealand.

“The right mix of registered nurses, enrolled nurses and health care assistants means that patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time,” says Chair of the NZNO Enrolled Nurse Section, Robyn Hewlett.

“I am pleased that enrolled nurse programmes are being offered at nine Polytechnics and that hospitals around the country are employing enrolled nurses to complement their health care teams.”

The Minister of Health announced the re-establishment of the Enrolled Nurse role in our health system in 2009 and since then hundreds of students have taken up the opportunity to up-skill and train for the new role. The first graduates entered the workforce this year and we are looking forward to welcoming many more over the next 12 months,” Hewlett says.

“NZNO encourages DHBs to take advantage of these new graduates as valued members of their nursing workforce.”

“Enrolled nurses around the country are celebrating in various ways. In the southern region dinners are being held in Oamaru, Dunedin, Invercargill and on the West Coast. In the north island members are having morning and afternoon tea and lunch celebrations in workplaces and decorating their wards and hospitals to mark the day.”
