CDHB welcomes announcement
The Canterbury District Health Board has welcomed the Government’s green light to move to the next phase of the redevelopment plans over the next six months for Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals.
Acting chief executive Mary Gordon says there could not have been a better Christmas present for Canterbury.
“This announcement is fantastic news and something really positive to end this year after all the challenges we’ve had in the last 18 months.
While there’s a lot of work to be done, we are really looking forward to progressing these projects to enable us to provide sustainable services for the people of Canterbury” Mary Gordon says.
“The Canterbury District Health Board would like to acknowledge everyone who has been involved in the planning of the redevelopment work that has been ongoing since March 2009. We are particularly appreciative of the significant contribution from our clinical and operational teams and the assistance received from the National Health Board and the Government leading up to this point.”
Ms Gordon says the board looks forward to continuing to work with clinical and operational teams to develop the business case, which will include more detailed plans for the design and function of the buildings.
The redevelopment plans include a rebuild of most of the clinical wards at Christchurch Hospital including a new acute service wing and a new specialist centre for older people’s health at Burwood Hospital.
“It will be some time before new facilities are ready, so visitors to Christchurch hospitals will see plenty of ‘It’s All Happening’ signage, which refers to ongoing repairs to existing buildings and infrastructure that are needed now so that we can continue to deliver a world class health service in the short to medium term.”
