Breakfast fuels chants for our champs
A good breakfast fuelled the power behind Western Heights Primary School’s winning entry in the Heart Foundation’s “Chant for Your Champions” competition.
The Henderson school developed a chant for their favourite rugby team, The Blues, and won themselves breakfast with
Blue’s midfielder Benson Stanley and sports gear for the school.
Heart Foundation Schools Programme Manager Jenny Stewart says that the Chant for your Champions competition was about raising awareness of the importance of breakfast and encouraging students to support their rugby
heroes.
“Children who eat breakfast every day perform better at school,” she says.
“A good breakfast boosts kids’ energy stores and provides their bodies and brains with the fuel to keep going through
the day. Eating breakfast gives kids a real head-start.”
More than 42 schools nationwide entered the Heart Foundation competition, submitting either a song, rap or haka that
included the line, “Breakfast-eaters have more fuel for sport and school”.
Ms Stewart says the Foundation received so many creative chants that it decided to award two winners, Auckland’s Western
Heights and Wellington’s Holy Family School.
The Western Heights chant “Blues Will Smash You” involved more than 200 of its students and is proving a hit on You Tube with more than 1000 views. Visit Chant for your champion! - The Heart Foundation to view this and other entries.
The school’s winning breakfast, which is sponsored by 5+ A Day and Foodstuffs, will be held on Thursday, 25 August at
the school. At the breakfast, Western Heights Primary students will perform their chant for the special guests and TV2
show “What Now?” will film the action.
