Beanies for babies big success

Beanies for babies big success

Hundreds of newborn baby beanies have flooded Christchurch Women's Hospital following a nationwide appeal to get the public knitting every newborn baby a woollen beanie this winter.

Jane Waite, Christchurch Women's Health Service Manager, says the response has been overwhelming and a big thank you needs to go out to everyone who has helped.

"It's really humbling. We've had such a fantastic response but we now have plenty and do not need anymore."

The Canterbury DHB now has enough beanies to give every baby born in the region a new woollen beanie when they leave hospital.

"Everyday parcels or boxes containing beautifully knitted woollen beanie have been arriving. We are just so grateful to everyone who has taken the time to help."

If you are in the middle of knitting a baby beanie, they would still be gratefully received but to please not begin making anymore.

The beanies for babies campaign was launched last month with the aim to make sure babies going home, especially to the red zone, are kept warm.
