Canterbury: Laboratory management to be discussed at meeting
Leading Transformation – Future Laboratory Management to be discussed at Canterbury Health Laboratories Meeting
Leading Transformation is the theme of the Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) Conference, being held tomorrow and Friday.
The annual meeting will provide laboratory managers from around Australasia the opportunity to discuss what the future holds for laboratory management and will look at past successes, current challenges, and future initiatives.
This year the meeting is being co presented by the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (AACB) and has attracted high calibre speakers, including, the Hon Tony Ryall, Minister of Health and Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister.
Trevor English, General Manager of Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) says this is believed to be the only meeting of its kind in the country and helps to provide a platform for laboratory managers to discuss common issues regardless of where they work.
“This year we have representatives from laboratories as far North as Northland right down to Invercargill, as well as Ministry of Health representatives, Australian colleagues and private companies involved in laboratory technology,” Trevor says.
Presentation content is balanced between Australian and New Zealand examples and initiatives, giving a good overview of the Australasian laboratory environment.
“The programme delves into laboratory leadership and includes an interactive workshop session,” he says.
“Part of the programme will also involve discussion of how CHL responded to February’s earthquake, particularly looking at the loss of two of the three community laboratories and what initiatives have been put in place since then in response to these changes.”
Over the years the meeting has moved from a predominantly scientific focus to recently becoming more aligned to management of and discussion surrounding the industry, Trevor says.
The meeting is on at the George Hotel from 9.45am tomorrow, Thursday July 21 and runs to 4pm Friday July 22.
