Million Dollar Health Centre Opens Doors

Million Dollar Health Centre Opens Doors

The new Amuri Community Health Centre has officially opened its doors to patients.

It has taken ten months to construct the 489 m2 facility, including a locum cottage, at a cost of around one million dollars – one of the largest investments of public money in the area in a number of years.

Hurunui District Mayor, Winton Dalley says the building is testimony to a continued commitment to integrated health care delivered at a local level and owned and operated by people committed to the Amuri.

“This building is the result of strong and continued support from residents, ratepayers and the district council to the provision of health services in the area.

It is an affirmation of the need for a modern building and facility to house an expanding service to meet the needs of the growing community and confirmation of this council’s commitment to ensuring its residents can access appropriate and timely health care.”

The Hurunui District Council is one of the few local authorities in the country to facilitate the provision of health care in its communities – a move designed to make it easier to attract and retain rural doctors in the district.

The new centre, at the corner of Heaton and Wilkins Streets in Rotherham, will cater for a wide range of medical services, not just general practice, but also district nursing and specialist care such as audio and eye care and physiotherapy.

“We can all be proud to have worked together to create a facility that will serve this community for years to come.

While we are all immensely proud of this achievement, it is just a building after all. The real heart and soul of this centre are the people who deliver the high quality care and professional services to our population – who we also acknowledge today.”

The entire Amuri community has fully supported a new medical centre and last year began paying a targeted rate to cover the costs of construction.
