Inaugural Korean Mental Wellness Workshop
The Mental Health Foundation’s Kai Xin Xing Dong (KXXD) programme is proud to support the first Korean community Mental
Wellness Workshop on Saturday, 18 June.
Through working with a number of other organisations, KXXD has discovered that although there is little information
specifically for New Zealand's Korean community, there is a wealth of information and resources internationally for
Korean people with experience of mental illness and those who are supporting them.
According to Statistics New Zealand, over 30,000 Koreans live in New Zealand, making them the third largest Asian
population in the country. Be it a fear of being discriminated against or a lack of knowledge around mental health, many
Koreans keep silent about their experience of depression and other mental health issues. In fact, when experiencing
mental illness many Korean families tend to seek treatment back home in Korea.
Each presentation on the day will work towards countering stigma and discrimination by educating the Korean community
about mental health services and break down the myths surrounding mental illnesses. Included among the speakers are
Korean Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Dr. Chohye Park, social worker Hagyun Kim and Taimi Allen from Mind and Body
Consultants
This free workshop will be conducted in Korean and is open to anyone wanting to attend. For more information or to
