RNZCGP Welcomes Extra Maternity Funding

RNZCGP Welcomes Extra Maternity Funding

The Royal New Zealand College of GPs has welcomed the Government’s announcement of an extra $54 million for maternity and WellChild services.

RNZCGP President Dr Harry Pert says the College has worked with the Ministry of Health, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and NZ College of Midwives on the Quality and Safety Programme for Maternity Services.

“And we welcome funding that will allow the initiatives developed as part of that programme to be implemented.”

Dr Pert says the College particularly welcomes the decision to implement standardised referral guidelines to help lead maternity carers refer patients to other practitioners.

“This will enable patients to be referred to GPs in appropriate circumstances, when previously referrals were only made to secondary care providers.

“We also look forward to better communication between providers and a greater integration of services.”

Dr Pert says the College is also pleased with the extra funding for WellChild services to allow extra visits where needed. “It’s particularly important to provide support for first-time mothers and their babies.”
