Safety tests of new Christchurch Hospital diesel boiler
Routine safety tests of new Christchurch Hospital diesel boiler
The Canterbury District Health Board would like to advise that as part of the commissioning process for Christchurch Hospital’s new diesel boiler, it will be venting excessive steam from the roof of the boiler house today.
From 3pm clouds of steam will be visible and there will be some associated noise, which may cause some disruption in the immediate area.
This is expected to last about 20 minutes and the Canterbury DHB apologises for any disruption this causes.
Canterbury DHB Project Manager for the Christchurch Hospital Boiler Replacement Project Terry Walker says the exercise is necessary as part of Canterbury DHB’s replacement project of its aging boilers to help reduce emissions and provide better heating to its hospitals.
“The Canterbury DHB and the public will benefit from an efficient, environmentally sensitive plant designed to meet increased hospital demands for the next 35 years,” Mr Walker says.
The three existing coal-fired boilers have provided steam for heating, humidification, domestic hot water, kitchen and sterilisation services for Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women’s Hospital and Canterbury Health Laboratories for the past 44 years.
