Gay Shirley reappointed to Waikato Board
Health Minister Tony Ryall has reappointed Hamilton accountant Gay Shirley as a board member of the Waikato District Health Board.
She replaces Gordon Chesterman who was elected to the board in October but resigned shortly after he became Hamilton city deputy mayor.
Mrs Shirley filled a previous vacancy on the board for 15 months until earlier this month.
Mr Ryall said it was an exciting period of progress in the public health and disability service. “I know you will share my enthusiasm for meeting the challenges we face at this time,” he said in his reappointment letter.
Mrs Shirley today said she had enjoyed her time on the board and found it challenging.
She chaired the Audit Committee and worked closely with chief financial officer Maureen Chrystall and the finance team.
“It’s an interesting area. Waikato DHB is a big business – Waikato’s biggest with a turnover of $1.1 billion and more than 6000 staff.
“In addition to that we are at the beginning of a $500 million plus redevelopment programme which depends on our financial performance being top notch. We need to be making surpluses to fund that programme and the work I’ve been doing with the board, the executive and the finance team ensures that is always at the top of the agenda.”
Mrs Shirley’s term starts on 20 December and ends on 8 December 2013.
