Canterbury virologist Dr Lance Jennings receives double international recognition

World renowned clinical virologist Lance Jennings has received double international recognition for his life-time contribution to science relating to pathology.

The Canterbury Health Laboratories and Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Pathology, University of Otago, Christchurch, last month travelled to London to receive a Fellowship from the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom.

Dr Jennings was one of two scientists to receive the fellowship from the college and as well as his recognition in the United Kingdom, he has also this month been named a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Science, Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and will travel to Melbourne in March to receive the award.

“I am extremely appreciative of being awarded the fellowships. They are an acknowledgement of my contribution to clinical virology within the field of health sciences. Professionally it’s very satisfying to be recognised for that,” Dr Jennings says.

His submission to the United Kingdom included nearly 70 peer reviewed scientific publications he had either authored or co-authored from 1977 to 2009.

The submission to the Australasian college was based on the demonstration of an ongoing contribution and excellence in science relating to pathology through publication, scientific leadership, innovation in the field and teaching.

“It (the recognition) contributes to your credibility as a scientist working within the health sciences,” Dr Jennings says.
