Top job for top Waikato surgeon
From Belfast, Northern Ireland to Waikato Hospital, New Zealand, cardiologist Gerry Devlin has come half way around the world and all the way to the top of his field.
Dr Devlin has been appointed clinical unit leader of the Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery Business Unit at Waikato Hospital.
Waikato Hospital Clinical Units director Dr Phil Wood made the announcement to staff yesterday.
Dr Devlin trained at the Trinity College University of Dublin, completing his Bachelor of Medicine in 1983.
Since then, he hasn’t sat still for long, but it was ultimately Waikato Hospital that kept pulling him back.
Dr Devlin moved to New Zealand in 1986 as a registrar in General Medicine at Palmerston North Hospital, until starting at Waikato in 1987 as a registrar.
From 1989-1991, Dr Devlin continued his cardiology and medical registrar training in Australia. He returned to New Zealand as an advanced trainee in cardiology from 1991-1994.
From 94-95 he travelled to Toronto General Hospital in Canada where he undertook a fellowship in interventional cardiology.
Dr Devlin then returned to New Zealand in 1995 as a cardiologist and senior lecturer in clinical medicine at which time he also became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP)
In 2001 he became clinical director of Cardiology at Waikato Hospital and a senior lecturer in medicine.
Six years later, he took on the role of the Heart Lung Unit clinical director, also at Waikato.
Dr Devlin’s interests in cardiology include cardiac catheterisation / angioplasty, clinical trials, research and heart failure and worked alongside Sanjeevan Pasupati with the introduction of the new transcatheter heart valve programme at Waikato Hospital.
In 2008, he was awarded the Kudos Award for Excellence in Medical Science, sponsored by Waikato District Health Board.
He is a renowned guest speaker at cardiac conferences throughout the world and has over 40 publications in peer recognised cardiology journals.
Dr Devlin is currently the chair of the New Zealand Regional Committee of Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
The married father of four will be taking a sabbatical to write his thesis in February-May 2011.
