Pink Ribbon Street Appeal a pink-tastic success
Pink Ribbon Street Appeal a pink-tastic success
Throughout the country volunteer collectors for The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s Pink Ribbon Street Appeal took to the streets on Friday, 8 October to take action against breast cancer.
Today, over 5,500 volunteer collectors donned in an array of pink wings, hats and outfits collected donations in exchange for pink ribbons.
The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s Chief Executive Evangelia (Van) Henderson says it is wonderful to see so many people giving up their time to volunteer for the street appeal.
“Breast cancer touches so many New Zealanders and we are so grateful for the huge level of public support we receive, especially that of our volunteers, whose participation is essential to the success of the appeal,” she said.
From Coopers Beach in Northland through to Stewart Island in the South, the New Zealand public continued to show their support, generously donating to the volunteer collectors who were located in over 135 locations throughout the country.
In Auckland city there were over 789 people out collecting all over the city for the Foundation.
The Foundation was also able to add in four new locations; Opunake, Lake Tekapo, Amberley and Bombay to our collection sites this year.
The money raised from the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal will go towards:
• Our education programmes to promote risk
reduction through early detection and positive lifestyle
choices
• Investments in research and medical support
which aim to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment
offered to women with breast cancer
• Our community
outreach programmes that help women return to their normal
lives as quickly as possible after treatment including Pink
Pilates and Sweet Louise
• Our advocacy which focuses
on the development of guidelines to improve consistency of
care with every aspect of breast cancer
• And for women
living with life limiting cancer, we look to provide them
and their families with the support, comfort and care
required to cope better with their treatment and its
day-to-day challenges
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month globally. This year The Foundation is encouraging all New Zealanders to play their part by taking action and encouraging their loved ones to go for regular mammograms and be ‘breast aware’.
