Drinking doesn't have to lead to an STD

Drinking doesn't have to lead to an STD

The YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand says it is ‘not surprised’ by research released today that confirms a clear link between youth drinking in New Zealand and the risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease.

“The youth binge drinking culture in New Zealand is out of control and a catalyst for unsafe sexual behavior. The infection rates for both sexually transmitted diseases and HIV is rising in New Zealand and alcohol is playing a big part in this disturbing trend,” says YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand Strategic Development Manager Sarah Davies.

The YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand believes a large part of the binge drinking culture in New Zealand is due to mixed messages around alcohol use. “Young women are being told by celebrity culture and New Zealand society that drinking is glamorous, fun and completely normal but there is little support in place for young women when their actions from drinking result in negative consequences. We need to address the root causes as to why young women are drinking so much and educate them on the risks involved with this behavior.”

The safe sex message cannot be repeated enough. “The use of alcohol and drugs can seriously damage judgment and negotiation skills. If young women are going out and think they might have sex, we really encourage them to make sure they have condoms to ensure they keep themselves safe.”
