Judy Bailey to front suicide prevention webcasts

Forum to host release of fronted suicide prevention webcasts

To recognise World Suicide Prevention Day on Friday 10 September, the Mental Health Foundation and Suicide Prevention Information New Zealand (SPINZ) are proud to announce the release of six webcasts fronted by Judy Bailey.

Each webcast sees Judy Bailey interviewing suicide prevention researchers, clinicians and service providers on various aspects of suicide prevention and covers content previously presented face to face in SPINZ workshops and presentations.

“To have someone with as much status as Judy Bailey supporting these webcast was a great opportunity,” Mental Health Foundation Chief Executive Judi Clements says. “We see them as a great way to share information about the warning signs for and risks factors for suicide, how to care for someone who is at risk, and the experience of loss after death by suicide.”

The release will take place at the joint SPINZ and Te Pou World Suicide Prevention Day Forum that is being be held at Auckland University's School of Population Health, Tamaki Campus.

The forum will be opened by the Associate Minister of Health, Peter Dunne, and anyone with an interest in suicide prevention is welcome. The forum will also be streamed live via the SPINZ website for those who can not be in attendance.

“Aside from the launch of our new webcasts, this forum provides an opportunity for all those with an interest in reducing suicide to come and learn about the latest prevention research,” Merryn Statham, Director of SPINZ says. “We will hear about media, hospitals, families and treatments and how they can contribute to lowering the suicide rate in New Zealand.”

Speakers to present throughout the day include Brian McKenna, John Fitzgerald, Dr. Emily Cooney and Dr. Peter Watson.
