Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) media statement on suicide reportage in New Zealand
The Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) believes that high incidence of suicide related deaths and injuries in New
Zealand is unacceptable and strongly supports more open and responsible discussion across communities and in the news
media, as recommended by Chief Coroner, Judge Neil MacLean, today.
Suicide is an important public health issue that affects all walks of life. FYD encourages discussion which looks at all
contributing factors and concentrates on safe prevention, not on individual cases.
FYD Programme Development Manager, Victoria Hood, says: “Each death is a terrible loss. More open discussion is needed
and the focus should be on why the suicide occurred, not on the details of how – which is distressing for grieving loved
ones. The emphasis needs to be on finding and funding solutions for the underlying causes of suicidal behaviour.
“FYD supports a collaborative approach across communities and organisations ensuring awareness, education and support –
a full wrap-around service that can provide advice and support for individuals, families and communities in need.”
