Christchurch Group Supports Big Latch On

Christchurch Breastfeeding Group Supports Big Latch On

The young parents’ breastfeeding group in Christchurch is encouraging mums to join them in a record-breaking breastfeeding attempt on Friday. The group, Whangai U “Matua Puhou”, also features on nationwide publicity about the Big Latch On – an annual event coordinated by Women’s Health Action.

Susan Procter, project facilitator, says the group hopes the event will encourage mums to seek information from a group before their baby is born, and access follow up group support with breastfeeding after the birth.

“We’re thrilled to be able to show women what a wonderful and natural part of life breastfeeding is. And we’re even more thrilled to be on the poster promoting the event!”

She says it is important mums know about the benefits of local breastfeeding support groups, and how to access these groups.

“Some New Zealand mums stop breastfeeding because of a lack of help and support once they are at home – and this needs to be addressed.”

“Young breastfeeding mums in particular often have difficulties continuing to breastfeed, which is one of the reasons our group was chosen for the Big Latch On poster.”

“Having support from other women in the same situation can really help mums to develop an enjoyable breastfeeding relationship.”

The Whangai U “Matua Puhou” group will be hosting a Big Latch On at Waipuna Community Rooms. Participants will be joined in the event by women across the country - last year New Zealand recorded about 1300 women breastfeeding simultaneously and numbers are predicted to be even greater this year.

Ms Procter says local, culturally appropriate support can really make the difference when it comes to women continuing to breastfeed.

“Mums are often not told about local support groups and it’s definitely worth taking the time to find one. Not only do women get the breastfeeding support they so often need, but it also means they don't feel alone. And it’s a great way to make some lovely friends too!”

The Whangai U Matua Puhou Big Latch On will take place on Friday 6 August at Waipuna Community Rooms, 349 Woodham Rd, Christchurch from 10am. Latch on will be at 10:30am.
