Love yourself this self-esteem day, says Foundation

Leading up to International Self Day on June 24, which focuses on achieving good levels of self-esteem, the Mental Health Foundation is suggesting ways for less confident Kiwis to improve their self esteem.

“Maintaining a good level of self esteem, neither too high nor too low, is important for people’s overall wellbeing,” Chief Executive Judi Clements says. “It aids people in leading a flourishing life, as it is connected to high levels of resilience, vitality, optimism and self-determination, as well as positive relationships.”

The Foundation’s work – such as its Manawa ora o ngā Taiohi programme, which worked towards improving cultural identity in rangatahi Maori, with participants reporting an increase in confidence – shows that raising self-esteem leads to an enhanced ability to seek help and support when required.

How to build self-esteem

Connect

Spend time with people with whom you feel respected and comfortable. Maybe join a campaign or work for a cause you believe in as this will add to your sense of purpose and meaning. Just make sure it is with a group that makes you feel empowered.

Treat yourself

Give yourself a treat and remind yourself that you deserve pleasure and pampering in your life.

Support others

Improving someone’s day by giving them your time, attention or even just a smile can help you feel good too.

Reduce your stress levels

Whenever possible, avoid situations where you have little power or that undermine your self-esteem. Although this maybe difficult in the short-term it is important for your long-term wellbeing. Try slowing down and taking notice of beautiful or interesting things around you to soothe your mind.

Set realistic challenges

Set realistic goals and work towards them. When you have achieved an aim, reward yourself. This can include learning something new, whether it’s bicycle maintenance or a new language. Learn to enjoy your own achievements.

Take care of your physical health

Make sure you have nutritious food and enough sleep, as well as making time to relax and be active regularly.
