“Senior Doctors Commend Appointments To
New Health Quality And Safety Commission”
“Senior doctors commend the appointments announced by the Minister of Health to the interim board of the new Health Quality and Safety Commission,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.
“This new important commission will have a critical role in actively promoting a culture and practice of greater quality and safety in the health system. We expect the new commission will provide a much sharper focus on quality and safety that should bring benefits for the quality of patient care and a better return for the health dollar. This builds on the positive work done over recent years by its predecessors.”
“We are especially delighted with the appointment of Professor Alan Merry to chair the interim board. We were pleased to nominate Professor Merry as the chair and commend the Minister for taking this advice which no doubt also came from many others in the health system. Professor Merry is a recognised exceptional leader in the movement to improve quality and safety both internationally and in New Zealand. It is difficult to think of a more appropriate appointment.”
“We also applaud the appointment of one of our other nominees to the commission, our former National President and intensivist care specialist Dr David Galler,” concluded Mr Powell.
