NZNO Celebrates International Midwives Day
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is today celebrating International Midwives Day and congratulates midwives for their important contribution to the health and well-being of mothers and babies. The theme of this year’s Midwives Day is “The world needs midwives now more than ever”.
“Midwives provide quality care for mothers, babies and families in hospitals and in communities around New Zealand” said NZNO Professional Nursing Advisor Kate Weston.
“Midwives have an important role in improving health outcomes in our communities. They understand that every childbearing woman deserves to give birth within a safe and supported environment for herself and her baby.
“We know that there are shortages of midwives in New Zealand and around the world. NZNO supports moves towards a sustainable maternity workforce in New Zealand to ensure all women who need a midwife have access to one.” Kate Weston said.
NZNO is committed to supporting midwives by campaigning for safe staffing levels, reasonable workloads and healthy workplaces to enable midwives to provide the right care in the right place at the right time.
