Make sure lovin’ is all you give this Valentines

Make sure lovin’ is all you give this Valentines

As 14 February swoops upon love birds this year, Auckland Regional Sexual Health Service is suggesting people take a different approach to the perfect gift by thinking about what they don’t want to give or receive.

Clinical Director of Auckland Regional Sexual Health Service, Dr Nicky Perkins, says a sexually transmitted infection is an unwanted gift in most people’s books and perhaps Valentines Day is an ideal time for couples to discuss their sexual health.

“A sexually transmitted infection (STI) like Chlamydia is not going to get you the kudos you’re looking for even if it comes with a dozen red roses and chocolates, says Dr Perkins.

“Valentines Day is an ideal time for couples to think about their sexual health and perhaps even get a check-up together. For new relationships, talking about using condoms to prevent STIs is also important, as well as regular check ups.”

Dr Perkins says Auckland Regional Sexual Health Service will celebrate Valentines Day this year by giving all clients who attend clinics on Friday 12 February a small gift following their check-up, which can be as simple as giving a urine sample.

“It’s a little token to join in the spirit of the day and acknowledge those who are taking care of not only their sexual health, but that of their partners too,” says Dr Perkins.

Auckland Regional Sexual Health Service offers a friendly and confidential specialist service which provides free sexual health checkups and HIV testing for all ages. Clinics are located in Greenlane, Henderson, Mangere and Glenfield. To make an appointment call 0800 739 432.
