NZ's first Degree in Natural Medicine launches

New Zealand’s first Degree in Natural Medicine launches.

A New Zealand Degree in Natural Medicine, developed specifically for the NZ context, is now available at South Pacific College of Natural Therapies (SPCNT).

“Having a New Zealand Degree in Natural Medicine is another step forward in supporting natural healing as the basis for kiwis’ health.” Said Robyn Carruthers, Deputy Principal at SPCNT where the degree course begins on February 15th. “Whereas the College previously offered a degree through an Australian university, this degree will recognise New Zealand’s unique health needs and context.

SPCNT has been teaching natural therapies since 1940.  “Community interest in natural health is shown by the College’s longevity and continued success.  Most importantly, the fact that over 90% of the graduates secure employment on completing their studies, shows that natural medicine holds a significant place in New Zealand health practice.”

This unique degree which integrates wisdom traditions with scientific knowledge, has three optional pathways in Western Herbal Medicine, Traditional Maori Medicine and Traditional Pasefika Medicine.

The distinctive Pacific context of the degree in Natural Medicine is evident in another new qualification at SPCNT in 2010, the Diploma in Traditional Pasefika Healing.

“A first for NZ and the world, the Diploma” Ms Carruthers said “was established in partnership with the community, particularly traditional healers. The College believes the Diploma will bring appropriate recognition in the health sector and the tertiary education sector for traditional Pasefika healing knowledge. It is a means of supporting the preservation and passing on of this valuable knowledge.”

A stand alone qualification, the Diploma also contributes credits to the degree in Natural Medicine.
