Health Warning Lifted For The Rangitaiki River

Health Warning Lifted For The Rangitaiki River

The latest check by Environment Bay of Plenty has confirmed that the algal mats present in the Rangitaiki River near Murupara prior to Christmas have reduced to the extent that the health warning issued in mid December has been lifted.

Toi Te Ora – Public Health, Medical Officer of Health, Dr Phil Shoemack says “This problem with blue-green algae can reoccur at any time so always check the water thoroughly before you get in”.

“If the water looks discoloured, smells unusual, or if there is scum on the surface of lakes or on the beds of rivers, swim or play somewhere else.”

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can release toxins, which can trigger asthma and hay fever attacks in susceptible individuals, as well as causing skin rashes, tummy upsets, and even neurological effects such as tingling round the mouth, headaches, general breathing difficulties and visual problems.

The health warning associated with a potentially toxic algal bloom in Lake Rotoehu remains in place.
